Why you feel confused in your relationship— examples of gaslighting and projection

Gaslighting is a subtle and twisted form of manipulation that emotionally abusive people use to get you to question your perception, sanity, or memory. This happens while the abuser takes zero accountability for their negative actions and how they affect you.

This type of behavior and unacceptable and is detrimental to your self esteem and mental health. If you find yourself dealing with these behaviors, take a step back, and remove yourself from the situation to avoid further damage.

Some examples of gaslighting include:

“Calm down, I was just joking”

“What are you talking about? You don’t listen.”

“Stop being so sensitive, learn how to take a joke.”

“What!? I didn’t do that”

“You make sh*t up in your head”

“Stop being so sensitive and emotional”

“You have issues”

“Stop imagining things”

“You’re crazy”

“I never said that”

“I don’t have time for your games”

“Why are you so defensive”

“You’re upset over nothing”

“You can believe what you want to believe”

“You need help”

“It’s always something with you”

“All you do is complain”

“You are so ungrateful”

“You can believe what you want to believe, I don’t care”

Abuser: “Huh? What are you talking about?! I’m not cheating on you with that girl!!”

You: “I know you are because I saw the text messages.”

Abuser: “Wow! You went through my phone, invading my privacy?! I cannot be with an insecure crazy woman, I’m out!!”
